The plot of the ballet is based on the life story of student Rodion Raskolnikov. He, thirsting for a good life, commits a sinful act - the murder of an old woman pawnbroker. From his university friend he learns that he is suspected of murder, after which his life becomes more and more unbearable with each passing day. Illness overcomes the hero, and he almost gives up. However, not only Rodion is highlighted among the main characters, Eifman added a certain innovative note, endowing the heroes with original features.
