On the Verge of Passion and Madness: Boris Eifman’s Ballet "Rodin, Her Eternal Idol"

The Alexandrinsky Theatre presents the ballet "Rodin, Her Eternal Idol," performed by the Boris Eifman Ballet. At the heart of the production is the relationship between the great French sculptor Auguste Rodin and Camille Claudel—who was not only his student and lover, but also a source of artistic inspiration. Their union lasted fifteen years, yet the intimacy between these two creative spirits proved complex: the desire to be together clashed with professional ambitions, jealousy, and a yearning for autonomy. The ballet premiered on November 22, 2011, and features a musical score composed of works by Maurice Ravel, Camille Saint-Saëns, and Jules Massenet.

The separation from Rodin proved a devastating ordeal for Claudel. She gradually withdrew from those around her, spiraled into a mental health crisis, and was eventually committed to a psychiatric institution, where she spent three decades. Camille passed away in 1943, leaving behind an artistic legacy and a tragic story—a testament to how even great talent cannot shield an individual from profound loneliness. Through the sculptor’s fate, the ballet explores themes of recognition, creative freedom, and the destructive power of unrequited or unfulfilled emotions.

Boris Eifman’s choreography captures what words struggle to express: the tension between the protagonists, the intensity of their bond, their internal conflicts, and the gradual collapse of their relationship.

Contemporary psychological ballet serves as a medium for exploring the nature of the creative impulse, obsession, and self-sacrifice. The visual world of the production is brought to life through set designs by Zinovy Margolin and costumes by Olga Shaishmelashvili, with lighting design crafted by Gleb Filshtinsky and Boris Eifman.
